VP Shettima Leads Global Call to End Internal Displacement in Nigeria

Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged for a worldwide collaboration to tackle the issue of internal displacement in Nigeria, affirming the government’s steadfast dedication to safeguarding the safety and welfare of displaced individuals.

Speaking at the launch of the State Action Plans on Durable Solution to Internal Displacement in Abuja, Vice President Shettima outlined the administration’s strategy in addressing Nigeria’s internal displacement challenge. He emphasized the nation’s commitment to prioritizing the well-being of its citizens, especially during challenging times.

The Action Plan, part of the United Nations Secretary General’s Solution Agenda on Internal Displacement, aims to provide internally displaced persons with lasting solutions, prevent new displacement crises, and ensure effective protection and assistance for those facing displacement.

Highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts, Vice President Shettima stressed the need for a cross-border approach to address the multifaceted challenge of displacement. He called upon both local and international partnerships to bring about meaningful change.

Acknowledging the support of global partners, including the United States, Vice President Shettima emphasized the necessity of a united front that transcends political boundaries.

The UN Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Amina J. Mohammed, commended Nigeria’s commitment to finding durable solutions to internal displacement, emphasizing its priority for both Nigeria and the United Nations Secretary-General.

Mr. Robert Piper, the UN Assistant Secretary-General and Special Advisor on Durable Solutions, praised Nigeria’s leadership in being the first country among 15 pilot countries to launch the programme. He reiterated the UN’s commitment to supporting Nigeria in addressing the challenges of displacement.

Governors from affected states, including Prof. Babagana Zulum of Borno State, Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State, and Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, reaffirmed their governments’ dedication to implementing the Action Plans on Durable Solutions.
