The Reasons We Struggle as a Nation: Insights from Obiora Okonkwo

The chairman of United Nigeria Airlines Company Limited, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, has shed light on the reasons behind Nigeria’s current economic challenges.

In an interview with Vanguard, Professor Okonkwo urged politicians to collaborate with bright minds before implementing policies. He emphasized that the neglect of education and intellectual matters has caused the country to stumble.

“The political class cannot operate in isolation from intellectuals. There should be a group of thinkers who develop ideas, which politicians, in collaboration with these bright minds, can then implement. Due to the disregard for education and intellectual issues, we continue to struggle as a nation,” Prof. Okonkwo remarked.

A Russian-trained academic and business mogul, Prof. Okonkwo is also the spokesman for the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), a group advocating for the smooth functioning of the airline industry to boost Nigeria’s economic growth.

Addressing the marginalization of the Igbo people, Prof. Okonkwo emphasized that Nigeria’s unity can be achieved through equity, justice, and fairness.

“The blame for marginalization should be placed on those who deliberately deprive others. Igbos contribute significantly to various sectors, yet they face marginalization. Even constitutional appointments often favor those who are not genuine representatives of the people’s choice,” he stated.

Prof. Okonkwo highlighted the need for fairness in resource allocation and political appointments. He noted that while some leaders genuinely pursue Igbo interests within Nigeria, they are sometimes misunderstood or criticized by their own people.

Regarding the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Prof. Okonkwo mentioned that the group’s struggle for the restoration of Biafra is fueled by the marginalization of Igbos in Nigeria. IPOB, founded in 2012 by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, protests against extrajudicial killings, political alienation, inequitable resource distribution, and ethnic marginalization in the South-East.

In conclusion, Prof. Okonkwo emphasized the importance of fair and equitable treatment for all ethnic groups in Nigeria, highlighting the need for collaboration between politicians and intellectuals for the country’s progress.
