Shaibu Denies Receiving Impeachment Notice from EDHA

Edo State Deputy Governor, Hon. Philip Shaibu, has refuted claims made by the Speaker, Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, during a recent plenary session at the state House of Assembly. The Speaker alleged that an impeachment notice had been served to Shaibu, which he purportedly refused to acknowledge.

In response to this, Shaibu, through a letter addressed to the Speaker and dated March 12, 2024, denied ever receiving such an impeachment notice. The letter, signed by his Personal Assistant, Charles Olubayo, clarified that Shaibu has been out of the state since March 3 and could not have been served as claimed during the plenary.

The letter stated, “The Office of the Deputy Governor, Edo State wishes to draw your attention to the inaccuracies and misleading information that emanated from the plenary session of Monday, March 11, 2024, wherein Mr. Speaker directed that the impeachment notice be served on the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu through newspaper publications The Nigeria Observer and other national dailies, ‘sequel to the refusal of the Deputy Governor to acknowledge the impeachment notice.’

“Mr. Speaker was quoted to have also stated at the said plenary that ‘the action became necessary because the Deputy Governor refused to acknowledge an earlier impeachment notice sent to him through the Clerk of the House.’

“We wish to state categorically that no impeachment notice was ever served on the Deputy Governor let alone refusing to acknowledge the impeachment notice.”

Shaibu’s office emphasized that neither the Clerk nor anyone else had served an impeachment notice to the Deputy Governor. The letter called for the Speaker to correct the public impression created during the plenary session to avoid any misrepresentation of this important matter.

This development highlights a significant discrepancy in the information presented during the plenary, raising questions about the process and transparency of the impeachment proceedings.
