Rivers State Police Suspend Two ASPs for Alleged Extortion

Two Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) in Rivers State have been suspended by the State Command due to allegations of extortion while on duty. The suspended officers, ASP Doubara Edonyabo and ASP Talent Mungo, are said to have engaged in improper conduct.This action was taken by the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olatunji Disu, with approval from the Inspector General of Police and the Police Service Commission. The suspension includes the halt of their salaries, as announced by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko.In addition to the suspended ASPs, Inspector Michael Odey was found guilty and dismissed from the police force on February 7, 2024, following a thorough trial conducted by the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 16.The statement released by the command said, “The Rivers State Police Command hereby provides an official update on a case involving three Police Officers accused of engaging in acts of extortion.”Regarding the suspended ASPs, the statement continued, “Today, we hereby inform the public that the Police Service Commission has officially authorized the suspension from duty of ASP Edonyabo and ASP Mungo, effective from 29/02/2024.”Commissioner Olatunji Disu emphasized the commitment to credible policing and stated that the decision to suspend these officers aims to deter others from misconduct. He urged the public to report any unprofessional behavior by police officers, ensuring that all reports will be handled confidentially.The salaries of the suspended officers have been stopped, and they will face the Force Disciplinary Committee for senior officers.
