“Reviving the Past: Lagos Island Model City Plan Aims to Restore Glory of Ancient City”
**Lagos Island Model City Plan to Boost Economic Prosperity**
The Lagos State Government is working on the Lagos Island Model City Plan to revitalize Lagos Island and spur economic growth.
Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, shared this during the Stakeholders Meeting on the Lagos Island Model City Plan held at the Muson Centre, Lagos.
This plan aims to tap into the unique characteristics of Lagos Island and plan for its sustainable growth and development. Dr. Olumide mentioned that the plan is set to transform Lagos Island into a top-notch commercial, industrial, and cultural hub in West Africa over the next 20 years.
The Model City Plan is also designed to preserve the cultural and historical heritage of Lagos Island while rejuvenating traditional communities.
To ensure broad participation, the planning process involved various stakeholders. The Draft Final Plan was displayed to the public for 28 days, followed by engagements with relevant agencies and interest groups.
Chairman of the House Committee on Physical Planning and Urban Development, Sylvester Ogunkelu, urged Lagos Island residents to support the Model City Plan, which aims to enhance the environment on Lagos Island.
Dr. Olajide Babatunde, the Special Adviser on e-GIS and Urban Development, emphasized the importance of forward-looking planning for Lagos Island’s development.
The consultant team, led by project manager Mr. Salim Eid, presented the Draft Final Lagos Island Model City Plan, focusing on challenges, opportunities, and strategies. Key areas addressed include flood protection, housing, heritage preservation, and transportation.
During the meeting, Lagos Island indigenes, represented by Oyinlomo Danmole, Erelu Abiola Dosunmu, Prince Abiola Kosoko, Engr. Hakeem Gbajabiamila, and Tpl. Lookman Oshodi, emphasized the need to blend development with cultural heritage, avoiding gentrification.
Other speakers at the event included Lagos State House of Assembly Member Olanrewaju Afinni, Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) General Manager Arc. Gbolahan Oki, and Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC) Managing Director Ayo Joseph.
Notable personalities in attendance included the Lagos WhiteCap Chiefs, Permanent Secretary of the Office of Physical Planning Engr. Oluwole Sotire, and former Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development Tpl. Toyin Ayinde.
