Political Unrest in Rivers: Councillor Resigns from Wike’s Camp, Backs Fubara

The councillor representing Nyesom Wike’s Ward in the Obio/Akpor Legislative Council of Rivers State, Achor Nna, has tendered his resignation.

Nna made this announcement in a letter dated March 7th, addressed to the council chairperson. He also posted a live video on Facebook confirming his decision to step down from his position.

In his resignation letter, Nna expressed his gratitude to Governor Nyesom Wike for the opportunity to serve as the leader of the Obio/Akpor legislature and councillor representing Ward 9 Rumu-Epirikom and Elioparanwa in the legislative council.

After resigning, Nna declared his support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara. He stated that his decision to step down was influenced by his desire to align with what he sees as the truth amidst the current political landscape in Rivers State.

Nna mentioned facing intimidation, marginalisation, coercion, bullying, and arm-twisting from some leaders in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area. He emphasized his commitment to speaking the truth despite challenges, referencing the popular saying attributed to former Kogi State senator, Dino Melaye: “If you say the truth, you die. If you lie, you die. Better to say the truth and die.”

He further explained his support for Governor Fubara, stating, “My chairman, I want to align with the progressive minds to liberate and develop Rivers State in line with the Simplified Movement,” referring to a political group formed to garner grassroots political support for Governor Fubara.

This resignation comes in the midst of a political crisis that has divided Rivers State into two camps, with one supporting Governor Wike and the other supporting Governor Fubara. The feud between Governor Wike and his predecessor led to an attempt to impeach Fubara last October.

However, a controversial peace deal brokered by President Bola Tinubu last December aimed to reconcile the two factions and bring stability to the state’s political landscape.
