Oshiomhole Says He’s Not Involved in Trying to Remove Shaibu as Edo Deputy Governor

Just one day after Vanguard reported that there were efforts to remove Edo State’s Deputy Governor, Mr. Philip Shaibu, the Edo State House of Assembly officially gave him a notice of impeachment. This notice gives Shaibu seven days to reply to accusations of breaking the rules in the Constitution.

During the meeting in the assembly, Majority Leader Mr. Charity Aiguobarueghian said that 21 out of 24 members signed a petition against the deputy governor, which is more than the two-thirds majority needed by the Constitution. The reasons for the impeachment include lying under oath and sharing government secrets.

In response, House Speaker Blessing Agbebaku told the Clerk, Yahaya Omogbai, to give Shaibu the impeachment notice and to allow him seven days to answer.

This is happening during a time when Shaibu and Governor Godwin Obaseki are not getting along, especially about who will be the candidate for the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Edo governorship election.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole, who represents Edo North Senatorial District and leads the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, says he has nothing to do with the impeachment process. His Legislative Aide, Victor Oshioke, said that reports linking Oshiomhole to the impeachment are untrue.

Oshioke’s statement explained that Oshiomhole has not talked with Governor Obaseki about removing Shaibu. Instead, Oshiomhole is focused on making good relations between the people of Edo State and the APC, hoping to do well in the upcoming governorship election.

The Coalition of Registered Political Parties (CRPP) has criticized Governor Obaseki’s plan to impeach Shaibu. CRPP Chairman Samson Isibor asked the governor to stop the impeachment plan, saying that Shaibu has not done anything that can be impeached for.

Shaibu has decided to stay quiet about all of this, and he’s talking with his lawyers because he hasn’t officially received the notice yet. Even though people tried to reach him for comments, Shaibu hasn’t answered his phone. One of his assistants said that Shaibu is not in town and will talk about this at the right time.
