NLC Informs Peter Obi: You’re Welcome to Leave the Labour Party

The Nigeria Labour Congress has informed the Labour Party’s presidential candidate that he can leave the NLC if he wishes to. This was disclosed by NLC spokesman, Benson Upah, during an interview with Punch on Sunday.

The NLC is determined to remove Julius Abure as the national chairman of the Labour Party, despite an ‘illegal’ national convention that kept Abure in office. Upah emphasized that the union does not recognize Abure’s leadership and will continue to challenge it.

In a related development, retired workers under the Lagos Assembly of Labour Veterans and Trade Unionists have called for the resignation of the embattled national chairman of the party and the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, due to their ongoing leadership struggle.

Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and LP presidential candidate, has been in conflict with the party’s leadership over the handling of the convention in Nnewi, Anambra State. Obi expressed his frustrations during an X Space session, mentioning that he did not attend the convention due to the lack of wider consultation with stakeholders.

Speculations have arisen that Obi might be considering switching to a different political platform, despite being assured the 2027 ticket at the convention. However, Upah stated that whether Obi stays or leaves the party is up to him, emphasizing that Obi is an asset to the party. Upah mentioned that if Obi chooses to leave, the NLC will not stand in his way, respecting his right to choose his political path.
