NLC Calls on Federal Government to Clear the Way for Health Workers’ Migration
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has asked the Federal Government to make it easier for healthcare workers to move to better opportunities. The NLC President, Mr. Joe Ajaero, spoke at the 11th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) in Abuja.
The theme of the conference is “The Nigerian Health System in the Era of Economic Downturn: Challenges and Way Forward.’’
Ajaero emphasized the need to remove obstacles for healthcare workers due to the tough economic situation in the country. He mentioned the challenges faced by workers, such as poor equipment, decaying infrastructure, and low wages that make it hard to meet basic needs.
The situation has led to healthcare services becoming too expensive for many Nigerians. Ajaero highlighted the negative impact of healthcare professionals leaving the country, not just for better pay but also for job satisfaction and self-realization.
He stressed the importance of fair wages and better working conditions, urging the government to focus on these instead of hindering workers from seeking opportunities elsewhere.
The NLC president praised the union’s efforts to improve working conditions and rights of healthcare professionals. Former NLC President, Mr. Ayuba Wabba, called for transparency from the government and unity within the union.
Dr. Kabiru Minjibir, acting National President of MHWUN, discussed the challenges faced by health workers, including the “japa syndrome” where workers leave for better prospects abroad. He highlighted the lack of working equipment and the stress on the few remaining healthcare resources.
Minjibir urged the new leadership to focus on bringing in young workers and women into leadership roles and developing strategies for the union’s growth.
