Kano Governor Yusuf Appeals to Tinubu for Border Reopening Amid Hardship

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State is urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently consider reopening the country’s borders for food importation, aiming to ease the suffering of Nigerian citizens.

The appeal comes as Governor Yusuf highlights the dire situation of hunger and starvation caused by the steep rise in commodity prices across the country. In a statement released by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, the Governor emphasized the need for immediate action to address the food scarcity crisis.

“We appreciate the President’s intervention with the national food initiative, especially as Kano is the host for its launch. We believe this program will help alleviate the effects of food scarcity if put into action,” Governor Yusuf stated.

He suggested that one effective way to make food more accessible and affordable to the population is by reopening the borders and allowing the free importation of goods.

During a meeting with the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, at the Government House in Kano, Governor Yusuf reiterated the hardships faced by the people, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan. He stressed the urgent need to reopen the borders to ease the burden on the citizens.

The Governor also commended the Customs Service for their initiative to distribute food items to the people of Kano during these trying times. He urged them to ensure that this assistance reaches those who are most affected by food shortages and high prices.

In response, the Comptroller General, Adeniyi, highlighted the importance of strengthening the relationship between the Customs Service and the Kano community. He emphasized the service’s commitment to collaboration and understanding with stakeholders.

CG Adeniyi mentioned that the Customs Service has taken steps to address the challenges of food scarcity and hardship in Kano by distributing essential food items to residents. He pledged to implement policies aimed at improving business processes and engaging more effectively with stakeholders for the benefit of Kano and Nigeria as a whole.
