ECOWAS Vice President Addresses Threat of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger to Exit Bloc

Damtien Tchintchibidja, the Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission, has expressed deep concern over the recent threat by Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger to withdraw from the regional bloc, describing it as both sad and disheartening.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, Tchintchibidja revealed that ECOWAS is actively engaged in efforts to persuade the three countries to reconsider their decision to leave, acknowledging that these efforts are ongoing.

“While we continue to work towards a resolution, it’s truly heartbreaking to witness three member states express a desire to depart from our community,” Tchintchibidja lamented. “We believe in the strength of unity within our community, akin to that of a family. Our efforts remain focused on fostering unity and cooperation among all member states.”

She emphasized the interconnectedness of the region’s peoples, highlighting the familial ties and porous borders that unite West African citizens across national boundaries.

Tchintchibidja also addressed the recent imposition of sanctions on Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger following military takeovers in these countries. ECOWAS has since lifted these sanctions in February, signaling a positive step towards resolving the crisis and creating an environment conducive to dialogue and reconciliation.

“While we navigate through these challenges, it’s important to remember that our bonds as West Africans remain unbreakable,” Tchintchibidja affirmed. “Regardless of the outcome, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger will always be valued members of our community, and we will continue to work together towards a prosperous and united West Africa.”
