Commission Reports Over 6 Million Nigerians Displaced by Insecurity and Disasters
The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) has reported that more than 6.1 million Nigerians have been displaced due to insecurity and natural disasters.
During a visit to Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State, the NCFRMI Federal Commissioner, Alhaji Tijjani Aliyu, shared this information, noting that the number has increased significantly from about 3 million in 2022 to over 6.1 million displaced persons currently.
Aliyu emphasized the challenges posed by this large number of displaced individuals, questioning how the government can continue to provide for them all. He highlighted the need to empower these individuals with skills and trades so they can become self-reliant.
To address this, Aliyu announced the commission’s plan to construct three well-equipped skills acquisition centers across the Northeast region using the 2024–2025 budget.
During the visit, the commission also distributed food items to approximately 700 displaced people in the state. Aliyu mentioned that the commission has been actively supporting these individuals, providing educational training funds for their children, and offering training and starter packs to improve living standards.
Additionally, the NCFRMI has intervened in areas such as water supply, providing a solar-powered borehole to address water problems in the IDP camps. Settlement cities have also been constructed in IDP camp locations for those who may choose not to return to their original homes.
Aliyu further stated the commission’s intention to enroll IDPs in a health insurance scheme to address their health challenges.
Governor Radda commended the commission’s efforts, emphasizing that it is a collective responsibility of both the state and federal governments to ensure the welfare and well-being of IDPs. He highlighted the security challenges faced by the state, especially in frontline local government areas, which have led to displacement in agricultural communities.
The governor expressed satisfaction with the improved security situation following the inauguration of the Katsina Security Watch Corps (SWC). He called for more collaboration with neighboring states and expressed optimism that the recent deployment of additional security operatives by the federal government would further improve security and prevent criminals from operating freely in the region.
The visit concluded with the NCFRMI officials flagging off the distribution of food items to the IDPs as part of their ongoing support efforts.
