Buhari Praises Tinubu, Acknowledges Nigeria’s Complexity: ‘You’ve Done Well
President Muhammadu Buhari has praised President Bola Tinubu for his efforts in managing Nigeria, acknowledging the complexities involved in governing the country.During a meeting with the comptroller-general and management team of the Nigeria Customs Service in Daura, Katsina State, President Buhari commended Tinubu’s performance despite the challenges faced by the nation.Buhari recognized the difficulty of the task of governing Nigeria, stating that there is limited room for drastic changes given the country’s complexity. He expressed gratitude to Tinubu for his efforts and noted the economic hardships faced by Nigerians nationwide.”I thank you very much for coming. I very much appreciate it. I thought Tinubu has done very well. Nigeria is so complex. Really, there isn’t much anybody can do,” President Buhari stated.Economic challenges have escalated in Nigeria since Buhari’s departure from office on May 29, 2023.On the day of his inauguration, Tinubu announced that his administration would cease fuel subsidy payments. This decision led to a sharp increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), rising from N185 to over N600.Additionally, Tinubu’s government implemented financial reforms, including floating the naira against the dollar, resulting in the continuous depreciation of the naira. The instability in the currency exchange rate has seen the naira trading between N1,400 and N1,900 against the dollar in the market. In response to these challenges, Nigerians, led by organized labor, have staged protests across the country in recent weeks, expressing their discontent with the worsening economic conditions that have pushed more Nigerians below the poverty line.
