Akpabio and Three Others Nominated for World Conference Committee on Speakers of Parliament

Senator Godswill Akpabio and three others have been nominated to serve on the Preparatory Committee for the upcoming 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament. This announcement came after a virtual meeting of the Geo-Political Group on March 7th, 2024. The General Secretary of the African Parliamentary Union (APU), Mr. Martin Chungong, conveyed this news to the General Secretary of the International Parliamentary Union (IPU).

The other committee members include Madam Carolina Cerqueira, Speaker of the National Assembly of Angola; Mr. Adams Bictogo, Speaker of the National Assembly of Cote d’Ivoire; and Mr. Brahim Boughali, Speaker of the National Popular Assembly of Algeria.

Senator Akpabio’s involvement in this committee follows his election into the Executive Committee of the IPU during the last conference held in Luanda, Angola. Notably, he led Nigeria’s delegation to the IPU’s 147th General Assembly in October 2023, breaking a 59-year jinx. He is the first Nigerian to be elected into this committee since 1964.
