Young Female Nigerian App Developers Shine at World Tech Summit in the US

Nigerian Schoolgirls Innovate with AgriConnect App, Head to World Tech Summit

Four talented young students from Jacob’s Well High School International in Port Harcourt have captured international attention with their groundbreaking android application, AgriConnect. This innovative app, designed to combat hunger in Nigeria, has earned them a coveted spot at this year’s World Technovation Girls Challenge in Silicon Valley, California.

The students, Oghenemaro Tejiri (12), Salome Akhabhau (11), Excel Barile-Nwika (11), and Goodness Nwonanne-Chima (12), developed AgriConnect under the guidance of Code Ambassadors, an organization dedicated to nurturing young tech talent. Their app was selected among 3,200 entries from 11,000 girls across 69 countries, highlighting its impact and relevance on a global scale.

AgriConnect stands out not only for its innovative approach to addressing food security but also for being the only Nigerian app selected for the final round and receiving a special award. This recognition underscores Nigeria’s growing prominence in global tech innovation, particularly among young female developers.

Mrs. Egondu Jacob, the school’s coordinator, expressed immense pride in the students’ achievement, emphasizing their contribution to placing Nigeria and Africa on the global tech map. She highlighted the school’s commitment to nurturing technological skills among its students, starting from primary education.

Mr. Somkenechukwu Mamah, the school’s tech consultant, voiced optimism about the students’ future, foreseeing them as pioneers in leveraging technology to solve societal challenges, especially in agriculture. He called for continued support and investment in their endeavors to ensure their solutions benefit communities across Nigeria.

The upcoming summit in Silicon Valley from October 15 to 19, 2024, promises to be a platform where the young innovators will showcase AgriConnect alongside other global tech solutions. Their journey exemplifies the potential of youth-led innovation in driving positive change and addressing critical issues like food security in Nigeria and beyond.
