Family confirms death of Yobe’s first-class emir
The emir’s younger brother, Alhaji Abubakar Talba, confirmed the death in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Damaturu, Yobe state capital on Saturday, May 11.
As reported by The Punch, Talba, a prince of the Tikau Emirate Council, said that Ibn-Grema died in Potiskum at about 4:00pm on Friday, May 10.
“Yes, I can confirm to you that the Emir died after a brief illness. He was over 70 years old at the time of his death,” he said.
The prince said the deceased, a first class chief, would be buried today, Saturday according to Islamic rites, The Guardian reported.
Who is Ibn-Grema?
Ibn-Grema, whose palace is located in Nangere Local Government Area (LGA), was the paramount ruler of the Karekare people.
As reported by The Cable, he was installed as Emir on July 25, 2001, and spent 23 years on the throne before his demise.
Mai Tikau: Dogara mourns as Yobe’s emir dies
Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Barrister Yakubu Dogara, has expressed shock over the death of the Emir of Tikau in Yobe State, Alhaji Muhammadu Abubakar Grema Ibn Shuwa.
In a message he personally signed and shared on his Facebook page, Yakubu Dogara, who holds the traditional title of Jarman Tikau, described the monarch as “a symbol of national unity”.
He wrote:
“I received with shock the news of the demise of His Royal Highness, Mai Tikau, Alhaji Muhammadu Abubakar Grema Ibn Shuwa.
“I condole with his immediate family, members of the Emirate Council, government, and people of Yobe State over this irreparable loss.
“May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Janatul firdaus.”
Ondo monarch dies 11 months after ascending throne
Similarly, TheTalk.NG reported that Oba Julius Omomo, the Olojoda of the Oda kingdom, in Akure, Ondo state capital, had died. He passed away at the age of 83.
Ade Adelakun, a family source, confirmed the monarch’s death on Sunday, April 14. He disclosed that the traditional ruler died on Saturday after a brief illness. He described Omomo as a “humble, decent and down-to-earth monarch”.
“The late monarch cared for his subjects as well as the unity and progress of the state,” he said.
