Super Eagles Captain William Troost-Ekong Recently Shared That He Almost Left The Super Eagles Team Before The 2023 Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) In Cote d’Ivoire.

Super Eagles Captain William Troost-Ekong recently said he almost left the Super Eagles team before the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.

He explained that he and former Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro weren’t getting along, especially after the team missed the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

At the 2023 AFCON, the Super Eagles lost to Cote d’Ivoire in the final, but Ekong played amazingly, scoring three goals. This made him the highest-scoring defender ever in AFCON history, and he was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).

In an interview with CNN, the 30-year-old mentioned he didn’t speak to Peseiro for months and even thought about quitting international football.

Looking back on his first game for Nigeria, he said, “It made me think about my younger self and how proud I was to play for Nigeria.”

Despite the tough times, Ekong decided to keep playing for Nigeria, showing his love for the game and dedication to the Super Eagles.
