Sunday Oliseh Open to Coaching Super Eagles Once More

Sunday Oliseh, the former head coach of the Super Eagles, has shared that he would be open to managing the team again if the right conditions are in place. Oliseh, who coached the team from July 2015 to February 2016, had a challenging relationship with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) during his time as coach. The 49-year-old midfielder, who played for Ajax in the past, had disagreements with some senior players while leading the team.

In a recent interview on Channels Television Sports, Oliseh expressed his stance on potentially coaching the Super Eagles again, stating, “Right now, what I can say is that I am going to put my wildcard on this question. As I have also often said, if Nigeria needs my services, I will always help my country if the right conditions are met.”

Following the departure of Jose Peseiro, who led the Super Eagles to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations last month, the NFF has begun the search for a new head coach ahead of crucial World Cup qualifiers. Peseiro, despite meeting the target of reaching the semi-finals, chose to step down after negotiations, primarily related to salary, fell through.

Applications for the national head coach position must be submitted by March 12, as announced by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Among those linked with the job is former Tanzania coach Emmanuel Amuneke, who previously assisted Samson Siasia and Augustine Eguavoen.

The new coach will be responsible for guiding the team through two important 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June, with a home match against South Africa and an away fixture against neighbours Benin. As it stands, Nigeria is in third place in their World Cup qualifying group with two points from two matches. Rwanda currently leads the group with four points, followed by South Africa with three points. The group also includes Lesotho and Zimbabwe, with the top team automatically qualifying for the World Cup in the United States in two years.
