Revised Headline: Akanji Questions Absence of Yellow Cards in Man City vs Arsenal Match
Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji expressed his confusion over Arsenal’s avoidance of “clear yellow cards” during their Sunday match at the Etihad Stadium, which ended in a scoreless draw.
The match, which featured only three shots on target, saw Arsenal content with a point as they defended against City’s attacks. However, City was left baffled by referee Anthony Taylor’s decision not to issue any yellow cards to Arsenal players, despite the Gunners committing 20 fouls.
Akanji highlighted one particular incident involving Kai Havertz’s late tackle on Stefan Ortega, which he believed deserved a yellow card. He mentioned that there were also some decisions against Arsenal that he found questionable.
“I don’t understand,” said Akanji. “One in the first half (from Kai Havertz) was a very late tackle on Stefan (Ortega). For me, it is clearly a yellow card.”
City, currently third in the Premier League table, will need to put aside their frustration as they have a match against fourth-placed Aston Villa on Wednesday. Akanji emphasized that there are still 27 points up for grabs in the title race, and City’s goal is to win all their remaining games.
Meanwhile, Arsenal will also be in action on Wednesday, playing against relegation-threatened Luton. The Gunners have a chance to return to the top of the Premier League table if they win, as Liverpool, currently in the lead, do not play again until Thursday.
Former City forward Gabriel Jesus noted the competitive nature of the Premier League, highlighting that the title race is still open with many games left to play. He mentioned the importance of concentrating on their own form and the upcoming Champions League matches.
“It’s the Premier League, it’s a tough league and anything can happen,” said Jesus. “It is only two points the difference (with Liverpool) and then we have a very good goal difference.”
As the season progresses, both City and Arsenal are aiming to secure victories and remain in contention for titles in both the Premier League and the Champions League.
