Nigerian Wrestlers Qualify for Olympics in Egypt

Four Nigerian wrestlers have earned their spots in the Paris 2024 Olympics after impressive performances at the ongoing African championships and Olympics qualifiers in Alexandria, Egypt.

Joining Odunayo Adekuoroye, who secured qualification last year, are:

– Blessing Oburududu, a silver medalist in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, secured her place for Paris 2024 with a convincing 2-0 victory over Uilau Tarkong of Palau in the 68kg category.
– Hannah Reuben, the World Military Champion in the 76kg category, secured her Olympics slot with a 6-0 win against Amy Youin of Cote D’Ivoire.
– Esther Kolawole, after overcoming Angelina Rodrigues of Cape Verde with a score of 10-0, also earned her ticket to Paris.
– Christiana Ogunsanya, the African Games champion in the 53kg category, dominated her match with a 10-0 victory over Egyptian Shaimaa Mohamed.

Unfortunately, Mercy Genesis narrowly missed out on a spot for the Paris Olympics after a close 5-7 defeat to Nada Mohamed of Egypt in the 50kg weight class.

These five female wrestlers will represent Nigeria in the Paris 2024 Olympics. The male freestyle wrestlers will have their chance to qualify on Sunday, which is the final day of this round of qualifiers.

For the remaining Olympic slots, the 2024 World Qualification Tournament in Istanbul, Turkey, from May 9 to 12 will determine who else will compete in Paris 2024.

The African championships and Olympic qualifiers, which began on Monday in Alexandria, Egypt, are set to conclude this Sunday. (NAN)
