Ghana Celebrates 67 Years of Independence
Ghana is marking its 67th year of independence from British colonial rule on Wednesday, March 6, 2024.
On this historic day, celebrations will take place at the Youth Resource Centre in the Eastern Regional capital of Koforidua, as reported by the Ghana News Agency.
Ghana gained independence on March 6, 1957, after 83 years under British colonial rule. It was a significant moment led by the country’s first President, the late Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who proclaimed Ghana’s liberation as a milestone in the nation’s history.
Each year on March 6, celebrations unfold across the country and among Ghanaians in the Diaspora. The festivities include a series of activities that continue throughout the month.
In a move to highlight different regions and boost local economies, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in 2017, decided to rotate the national independence celebration. The Eastern Region is the third region to host the national anniversary, following the Central Region in 2022 and the Volta Region in 2023.
This year’s celebration carries the theme: “Our Democracy, Our Pride.”
The event will be honored by the presence of President Alassane Ouattara of Côte d’Ivoire as the Special Guest of Honour. About 120 ambassadors and high commissioners from various countries, along with Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament and the 275 Members of Parliament, are expected to attend.
The celebration will feature a parade involving security services, students, pupils, and various groups and institutions, showcasing Ghana’s rich culture and history.
