Conflicting Court Orders Arise in Kano Emirate Dispute Regarding Sanusi’s Removal
The dispute over the Kano Emirate’s leadership took a dramatic turn as conflicting court orders emerged from both federal and state jurisdictions. The Federal High Court and the Kano State High Court issued contradictory directives regarding the status of the reinstated Emir of Kano, Muhamadu Sanusi II.
The state government had previously dissolved the five emirates, removed Aminu Ado Bayero as the emir of Kano, and reinstated Muhamadu Sanusi II. However, the Federal High Court ordered Sanusi’s eviction from the palace, while the state high court prohibited security agencies from arresting or harassing him.
In response to an ex parte motion filed by Bayero, the Federal High Court granted an order restraining security agencies from taking any action against Sanusi and allowing him to continue using the palace. Meanwhile, the Kano State High Court issued an interim injunction preventing the police, DSS, and military from forcibly removing Sanusi and interfering with his functions as emir.
The conflicting court orders have added complexity to the ongoing dispute, with both sides asserting their legal authority. Amid heightened security around Bayero’s residence, the situation remains tense as the legal battle unfolds.
Political figures and organizations have weighed in on the matter, with calls for peace and adherence to the rule of law. A political ally of President Buhari urged intervention from President Tinubu to resolve the crisis and uphold the court’s decision. Similarly, the Northern Professionals Forum urged Bayero to prioritize peace and cooperation in the interest of Kano State’s stability.
As the legal proceedings continue, the focus remains on finding a peaceful resolution to the dispute and ensuring stability in the Kano Emirate.
