Ensuring Effective Governance: Tinubu’s Initiative for Nigeria’s Tertiary Institutions

In a significant move aimed at enhancing the management of Nigeria’s tertiary education sector, President Bola Tinubu has approved the reconstitution of governing councils and boards for federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the country. This decision, announced by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), underscores a commitment to bolstering institutional leadership and governance.

The reconstitution process follows President Tinubu’s directive in May for a comprehensive review of the initially proposed nominees, responding to concerns from stakeholders, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Their feedback highlighted issues such as representation and balance within the boards.

Among the notable appointments, Wole Olanipekun, a distinguished Senior Advocate of Nigeria, will lead the Lagos University (UNILAG), while Isa Yuguda, former Governor of Bauchi State, takes charge at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). Additionally, Yayale Ahmed, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, assumes responsibilities at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (ABU).
