She added that she is doing manual jobs to put food on the table, and it is hard to raise the KSh 33,000 balance to get her son’s certificate.

“I have a son who did his exams in 2022. He got a B+ grade, and since then, my son has been pushing mkokoteni, or selling shoes in town for him to eat. He was called to Murang’a University and I have been unable to help him join. He did his exams at Butula Boys in 2022, in Busia County. He has a KSh 33,000 fee balance, I have not cleared and I have no way out. I had a hotel, but it was demolished, and now I only farm and wash people’s clothes to eat,” she said.

“This is the problem with the education system. Students cannot transform learning into practical use. I hope the young man raises enough capital to transform the mkokoteni market. Large opportunity.”

“By the time Ruto concludes his term in office, even the middle class will not afford to sustain their kids in the university. It will be a preserve of the super-rich, lazy kids.”
