Nigerians Criticize Minister for Statements on Tinubu’s Reforms, Accuse Government Economic Policies of Worsening Hunger

President Ahmed Bola Tinubu is nearing his one-year mark in office. Recently, Senator Abubakar Bagudu, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, spoke on Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, stating that the economic reforms under President Tinubu’s leadership are showing positive signs. He mentioned that these measures have restored faith in Nigeria’s economy and attracted renewed interest from foreign investors.

However, many Nigerians are skeptical and critical of the minister’s remarks. They argue that instead of seeing the promised fruits of these reforms, the country is experiencing increased hardship, with economic policies leading to more hunger and suffering. Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, a human rights activist, expressed disappointment, noting that the current situation is worse than what President Tinubu inherited.

Others like Hon Ayo Fadaka and Mr. Saviour Akpan demand accountability, urging the minister to resign for what they perceive as misleading statements about the economy. They highlight the disconnect between government narratives and the harsh realities faced by ordinary Nigerians, including skyrocketing food prices, inflation, and job losses.

Critics like Iniruo Wills and Amaebi Clarkson question the authenticity of the so-called economic reforms, citing impulsive policy changes and their adverse effects on the populace. They emphasize the need for genuine reforms based on thorough assessments and consultations.

Despite differing opinions, there is a consensus among some, like Rev David Ugolor, that the government’s portrayal of economic progress contradicts the actual state of affairs. Dr. Dan Ekhareafo and Stephen Adewale emphasize the importance of tangible improvements in people’s lives, beyond rhetoric and misleading statistics.

Moruff Balogun urges the government to fulfill its promises of improving the welfare of Nigerians, emphasizing the need for stable electricity, affordable goods, and maximum security. Elder Joseph Ambakederimo acknowledges both achievements and setbacks in the government’s performance, urging continuous fine-tuning of economic policies to enhance living standards.

Amidst the criticisms, Olugbenga Oke-Samuel commends President Tinubu for boldly tackling economic challenges and positioning Nigeria for global competitiveness, recognizing the difficult decisions required for long-term growth.
